Canada - Bank of Montreal $2 1830s Steel Printing Plate

This printing plate was recently discovered in a safe in New Jersey and then consigned to our auction. It is a Rawdon, Wright, and Hatch steel printing plate. It is for the 1830s two dollars or ten shillings issue. Of course the plate is shown with a mirror image of the banknote it was producing. We can't find any other record of any plate like this existing from the Bank of Montreal or any other Canadian bank. To call it rare probably isn't adequate enough. The plate has some rusting spots. It shows no damage or any indication that the plate was ever scrapped or cancelled.
