Lexington, VA - Ch. 4314 - $5 1882 Brown Back

We don't use the term trophy note loosely, but that title is appropriate here. This is the only brown back known from charter 4314. The bank originally opened as The First National Bank of Buena Vista. It became The First National Bank of Lexington in 1895. There are five 1902 blue seals listed for the bank, but none are better than F/VF. The note we are offering here is an absolute peach. The margins are perfect and brown signatures look great set against the brown treasury seal. The note has three vertical folds. I would be shocked if this ever circulated though. Simply put, you just do not see $5 brown backs from Virginia that have grade as well as both bank and town rarity. We believe this note is estimated appropriately and we know whoever wins it will be far from disappointed with the purchase.
