Howard, KS - Ch. 3794 - 1902 $5 Blue Seal Plain Back

Howard, which is the county seat of Elk County, was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1877. It was named after the same man, Oliver Howard, who founded Howard University. By the time this blue seal was issued, Howard was large enough to support two successful national banks. In a state where it is tough to get excited about blue seals, this peach with its top selvage still attached is a welcome exception. The note is complete with darkly stamped signatures of the cashier and president.
